For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control II Timothy 1:7
There once was an old radio show titled Information Please. It was a question-and-answer show that later grew into an almanac of the same name. The show answered the questions called in by curious listeners who wanted specific information on a variety of topics. The title still has resonance with many people of a certain age.
I recently spoke with some clients in couples counseling. The wife has pretty high levels of anxiety, and she gets stressed with even a minimal level of uncertainty. In other words, people with high levels of anxiety need lots of information in order to lower that anxiety. People who have higher levels of anxiety do not like surprises. They like to plan for events that might be upsetting. Hence, the need for a lot of information.
Generally speaking, the higher level of information in a matter allows for more control. More control means lower anxiety. Control is not a bad thing- we all want it, let’s be honest. However, there are many things which we cannot control, and that allows our mind to fill in the unknown blanks, and often to predict some dire consequence of a situation.
I talked with my clients about this concept, and he understood that the more he can give her information about a situation, the calmer she will feel. She would like a plan of action for certain future actions, and, having that information, she will feel relief.
By understanding her needs, the husband can better help her to deal with her anxiety, giving her some relief, and giving both a more peaceful household.
Prayer: Lord, you have created us to be curious and inquisitive. Give us patience when we do not have all the answers, Amen
