The Wisdom of Serving

The world of the generous gets larger and larger;
    the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped                                                                                                        Proverbs 11:24-25 (The Message)

One of the typical types of homework that I give to my clients is to find a way to serve others. There is so much value in this practice for so many reasons. When serving others, we cannot fully concentrate on our own troubles. That is a good thing.

One of my clients who has chronic pain realizes that she has done all that she can do medically to deal with her situation. So, she has a choice- become a victim of the pain and let it make her bitter, or she can concentrate on serving others, have a diversion from thinking about her pain, and at the same time feel that she has purpose when she wakes up every morning. She chooses to serve others.

The book of Proverbs has a lot of wisdom in its pages, and the one above is a good example. It talks about making our world larger and larger. When we volunteer, we serve others, but we also are served.

Prayer: Thank you for the plan that as we serve, we are served also, Amen
